DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES REHABILITATION AND
DIVESTITURE OF THE HALIBURTON (HEAD LAKE) HARBOUR FACILITY
HALIBURTON – Local MP Barry Devolin announced today on behalf of the
Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal
government and the Municipality of Dysart et al. reached an agreement for the
partial reconstruction and transfer of the Haliburton (Head Lake) harbour
facility.
“With significant investments in small craft harbours, the Harper government
is helping Canadians weather the economic storm,” said Devolin. “This
investment will ensure continued safe public access for years to come and enable
the communities and fish harvesters to make the most of their economic
opportunities.”
A Memorandum of Understanding between the federal government and the
Municipality of Dysart et al. has been signed. Under this agreement, the federal
government provided approximately $87,000 in funding for the project and the
Municipality is administering the reconstruction work. Construction was
completed at the end of March, 2009.
The Haliburton (Head Lake) harbour facility is an “L”-shaped timber deck and
pile dock, with floating docks and a launching ramp. The project involved the
removal and replacement of the existing timber deck, beams and joists that have
deteriorated over the years as well as replacement of some floating docks.
This project was undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada under the
Recreational Harbour Divestiture Program. The facility is now being transferred
to the Municipality of Dysart et al.Budget 2008 allocated $5 million in 2008-9
for repairs and environmental cleanup at recreational and non-core fishing
harbours to permit transfer to interested parties.
