DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $20,340 TO PROMOTE THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF ANNE LANGTON

FENELON FALLS – Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced $20,340 in funding to the Fenelon Falls and District Lions Club through the Government of Canada's Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program.

The money will be used to help the non-profit group present the 175th Anniversary of Anne Langton in Fenelon Falls, Blythe and Sturgeon Point from March 1, 2012 to October 31, 2012.

"One of the ways in which communities come together is by celebrating events to which we can all participate," said Devolin. “By partnering with communities to support activities that celebrate our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”

Some of the activities include art exhibits, landscape art presentations, needlecraft demonstrations and local history presentations. Capital projects include the re-creation of the Langton Schoolhouse, which will be located in Fenelon Falls.

In total, 360 volunteers are expected to donate over 4,400 hours in the planning, managing, implementation and evaluation of the anniversary which takes place over a period of 8 months.

"This type of event can help us understand who we are and where we’ve come from and to do so in fellowship with our friends, neighbours, and families," said Devolin. "These events - whether marking an important historic moment or celebrating our Canadian culture — also provide a boost to our local businesses and help support our local artists and artisans."

The Government of Canada created the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
