DEVOLIN PROUD TO SUPPORT BUDGET 2010: LEADING THE WAY ON JOBS AND GROWTH

OTTAWA – Local MP Barry Devolin is proud to support Budget 2010: Leading the Way on Jobs and Growth, delivered in the House of Commons today by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

“The document is a result of hundreds of consultations with Canadian workers and businesses across the country and the message has been clear, Canadians remain concerned about jobs and the economy,” said Devolin. “In keeping with Canadians’ priorities, the budget plan completes our Economic Action Plan – stimulus measures to create jobs now. It takes additional steps to protect existing jobs and create new ones, and it looks ahead to secure Canada’s long-term growth.”

Included in the budget was $300 million in tariff savings for manufacturers, a commission to be established aimed at reducing “red tape” for business, increased funding to encourage advanced technology industries and signaled its readiness to open the door to more foreign investment in Canada.

In addition, the budget committed the federal government to the second year of stimulus spending, of $19-billion. Plus, there was some new spending on a series of initiatives aimed at skills development and improving the business-investment climate -- including $100-million to extend a work-sharing plan.

“Over the past month, I was pleased to meet with residents, farmers and business leaders from across the riding who provided me with ideas on what should be included in the budget,” said Devolin. “Overall, I believe the budget strikes a fair balance between adding momentum to the recovery from a deep recession, and preparing the economy for fiscal restraint,” said Devolin.
