DEVOLIN PLEASED BILL TO REPEAL THE LONG GUN REGISTRY PASSED SECOND READING IN THE HOUSE

OTTAWA: Local MP Barry Devolin was pleased to stand in the House of Commons last Wednesday and vote in favour of Bill C-391, a Private Members’ Bill, which aims to repeal the wasteful long-gun registry.

The minority Conservative government got help from twelve New Democrats, eight Liberals and one Independent to easily pass second reading with a vote of 164-137.

“I’m pleased that a majority of MPs have supported this bill,” said Devolin. “However, this is only the first step in the legislative process. The bill still needs to go to committee and third reading in the House of Commons, and then through a similar process in the Senate.”

“It is no secret that the long-gun registry was originally budgeted to cost Canadians $2 million, but the price tag has spiralled out of control to an estimated $2 billion a decade later,” said Devolin. “Not only that, but the registry does nothing to fight crime and only targets honest gun owners.”

“I think money saved on scrapping the wasteful long-gun registry would be better spent on going after illegal weapons, including hand guns smuggled in from the United States,” said Devolin. “We are primarily focusing on the wrong people and need to refocus
on the criminals."

“It’s important for those Opposition MPs who have supported this Private Members’ Bill at second reading to continue their support for ending the long-gun registry as it makes its way through Parliament,” said Devolin.
