DEVOLIN PLEASED WITH THE COMPLETION OF HIS SIXTH CAPITAL EXPERIENCE TRIP

LINDSAY – Local MP Barry Devolin completed three days of meetings yesterday with 16 local secondary school students who took part the sixth Capital Experience program.

The program started this past Sunday when two or three students from each of the riding’s seven secondary schools left for Ottawa in an effort to show them more about various careers in public life that could await them following their post secondary education.

The trip’s agenda included meetings with a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a program advisor from the International Youth Programs Section, an advocate from Amnesty International, John Ivison from the National Press Gallery, Jenni Byrne (a graduate of Fenelon Falls Secondary School) formerly of the Prime Minister’s Office and Tim Powers from SUMMA, a government relations firm.

“This trip opened my eyes to the multitude of opportunities that exist for young people leaving high school,” said Kyle Gavin of Fenelon Falls Secondary School. “It is because of this trip I plan to investigate the International Youth Program through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and hopefully work this summer in different country. This will allow me to gain valuable global experience which will help me in the future.”

“This trip came at the right time for me,” said Sarah Hutchings of Brock Township Secondary School. “There is a lot of pressure for high school students to choose what we want to do in the future and this program opened my eyes to the many avenues available to me I might not have known of from just being in a small town.”

“For me, the most common point many of the presenters stressed is if you are interested in something, and you have the ability and means, volunteer as much as you can,” said Iain Becking of I.E. Weldon Secondary School in Lindsay. “It was said many times that by volunteering, you gain valuable life and work experience while at the same you support the organization you are helping.”

“What I was able to pick up is that the skills I learn in university or college can be used in a variety of careers, not just the specific field I choose,” said Jake McKend from Crestwood Secondary School. “I took a particular interest in how people with all sorts of different backgrounds are able to find employment and contribute what they’ve learned in school as well as through their life experience.”

“A number of service groups and local businesses stepped forward to sponsor a student from their community,” said Devolin. “I want to thank them for helping me to make these young people more aware of the career options available to them.”
