DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $192,700 FOR OUTDOOR TRAILS IN HALIBURTON COUNTY

EAGLE LAKE: Local MP Barry Devolin on behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), and Terry Norman, National Coordinator, National Trails Coalition (NTC) today announced $192,700 for five separate outdoor trails projects in Haliburton County.

The $25 million investment in recreational trails will mean 450 trail projects across Canada will benefit from the Government’s Economic Action Plan. 

“As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, Canada is proud to provide the first payment of $12.5 million to the National Trails Coalition to get construction underway,” said Devolin. “By partnering with the National Trails Coalition we are boosting local economies, creating jobs, getting shovels in the ground and providing Canadians with better quality trails.”

The successful projects are:

Sir Sam’s Ski Area will use $15,000 to expand the current trail system of 3km of cross-county trails and 3km of downhill ski trails to adapt them for mountain bike riders and racers during other seasons; 

County of Haliburton will receive $53,500 to expand the Haliburton Rail Trail; 
Township of Highlands East will get $47,850 to re-establish the Cardiff Trail; 
Minden Hills/Haliburton ATV Assoc. will use $3,750 to grade the trail bed on two area trails and; 

Haliburton Highlands Water Trails will receive $55,800 to expand canoe routes, signage and GPS mapping around Carnarvon 

Highlands East will use $16,800 the Irondale Bancroft and Ottawa Rail Trail at Tory Hill and to repair the Gooderham Walking Trail 


Applications for this funding were received between May 26, 2009 and June 26, 2009. With the intake for this funding now complete and projects approved, this first payment to the National Trails Coalition will allow work on trails to begin right away and generate economic activity in Canada’s construction sector.
