DEVOLIN ATTENDS OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE MINDEN RIVERWALK PATHWAY AND PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE

MINDEN: Local MP Barry Devolin, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Haliburton County Development Corporation and the Township of Minden Hills are proud to announce the Official Launch of the Minden Riverwalk Pathway and Pedestrian Footbridge in the Village of Minden. This project was funded in part with support from the Government of Canada’s Gas Tax Fund and its launch coincides with the annual Minden Canada Day Festivities on July 1st in downtown Minden

"As a resident of Haliburton County, I recognize the importance of the beautification of our small towns and villages such as the pedestrian pathway in Minden," said Devolin. "This new pathway will allow residents and visitors alike to enjoy the beauty of the area and encourage many to achieve higher levels of physical activity. Investments in these projects stimulate the economy, enhance local facilities and services and foster vibrant, dynamic communities."

The Minden Riverwalk pedestrian pathway and footbridge has created a “loop” trail within the historical downtown Village of Minden, and enhances the uses of the Gull River which flows through its centre.

“The completion of this project is a great example of how all levels of government have worked together to complete a destination where all ages can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Minden Hills area while it encourages people to park their cars, walk and enjoy their surroundings,” said Jim McMahon, Reeve of Minden Hills. “This not only provides an area for the safety of pedestrians, seniors and children but also encourages health and well being as well as a social activity where they will meet many friends and travelers.”

The $391, 935 project was made possible by a $256, 300 investment from the Gas Tax Fund. The Minden Riverwalk Pathway was been developed in stages with the final completion of the pathway and installation of the pedestrian footbridge installed in 2009, in celebration of the Village of Minden’s 150th Birthday.

Reeve Jim McMahon, on behalf of Council, for the Township of Minden Hills would like to thank the Government of Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Haliburton County Development Corporation, the Friends of Minden Hills and Haliburton Highlands (Riverwalk Committee), the merchants and citizens of Minden Hills and Haliburton County for their support, understanding and patience during the completion of our Riverwalk “community driven” project.

By 2014, Ontario will have received more than $4.8 billion in federal support for infrastructure from the Gas Tax Fund.
