DEVOLIN ATTENDS GROUNDBREAKING FOR VICTORIA AVENUE IN BEAVERTON

BEAVERTON — Local MP Barry Devolin today joined the Township of Brock and MPP Rick Johnson at the official groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of work to reconstruct Victoria Avenue in Beaverton.

Through this project, the roadway will be constructed to include curbs, gutters and pedestrian sidewalks. The project will also include the construction of a new storm sewer system to collect drainage from Victoria Avenue and the surrounding area within Beaverton.

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to $372,322 in the project. The Township of Brock will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $1,116,966.

“The reconstruction of Victoria Avenue will increase road safety, mobility and sustainability in the Brock area,” said Devolin. “These upgrades will improve the quality of life of local residents and visitors who depend on and use this route every day.”

“This project is another example of how the McGuinty government acts on its commitment to improve the quality of life for those living in rural Ontario,” said MPP Johnson. “By reconstructing Victoria Avenue we are ensuring that local residents have access to safe and reliable public infrastructure.”

“We’re thrilled to break ground on this community project, which will provide safe and reliable access to our local marina, beach and existing homes,” said Brock Township Mayor Larry O’Connor. “The improvements we’re celebrating today will not only provide a safer roadway, but will also improve the quality of water entering beautiful Lake Simcoe.”

This project is one of 290 across the province that will break ground thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of over $685 million under the first intake of the Building Canada Fund Communities Component. Together with funded applicant contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Ontario exceeds $1 billion.

During these challenging economic times the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
