GOVERNMENT OF CANADA MAKES MAJOR JOB-CREATING INVESTMENT IN NATIONAL TRAILS

LINDSAY – Local MP Barry Devolin on behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today announced that the Government of Canada, in partnership with the National Trails Coalition (NTC), is launching a call for applications for the $25 million Canada's trail infrastructure program, a part of the Government’s Economic Action Plan.

“I’m delighted that trail users will have access to this funding”, says Devolin. "I know that several local groups have been waiting to submit applications, and I wish them well in getting some of these funds for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock.”

Minister Lunn said “Shovel ready projects that are set to break ground in 2009-2010 will create new trail infrastructure and provide a safe venue for a variety of trail users such as hiking, equestrian, ATVs, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. These projects will leave a lasting legacy of trail infrastructure that will benefit Canadians for years to come.”
Terry Norman, Trail Coordinator for the NTC stated, “The NTC was founded in the belief that trail users and volunteer trail builders/managers can achieve much more by working collaboratively and supporting each other’s goals. Thanks to the support of our Federal Government, trail user groups can now apply for one year project funding to facilitate trail building, refurbishment, and maintenance activities that will be beneficial to the long term sustainability of all forms of trail-based activities across Canada.” said Norman.
The Government of Canada’s investment will be matched by the National Trails Coalition, a joint venture, made up of the following non-profit organizations: Canadian Trails Foundation, Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations and the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council and their provincial, territorial, municipal or private funding partners.
