DEVOLIN COMPLETES FIFTH CAPITAL EXPERIENCE

LINDSAY – Local MP Barry Devolin wrapped up three days of meetings Tuesday night with 15 local secondary school students who took part the fifth Capital Experience program.

Two students from each of the riding’s seven secondary schools plus one student from Apsley left for Ottawa this past Sunday in an effort to show them more about various careers in public life that could await them following their education.

This year’s agenda included meetings with representatives from the South Korean Embassy, a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an advocate from Amnesty International, John Ivison from the National Press Gallery, Jenni Byrne (a graduate of Fenelon Falls Secondary School) from the Prime Minister’s Office and Tim Powers from SUMA, a government lobby firm.

“What I was able to pick up is that the skills I learn in university or college can be used in a variety of careers, not just the specific field I choose,” said Lori Josephson from Brock Secondary School. “I took a particular interest in how people with all sorts of different backgrounds are able to find employment and contribute what they’ve learned in school as well as through their life experience.”

“I’m very interested in journalism so speaking with John Ivison from the National Post was the best part of the trip for me,” said Grant Leeder from Fenelon Falls Secondary School. “Learning how a newspaper is put together and all the work that goes into it really grabbed my interest.”

“It’s often said that our youth is our future,” said Devolin. “Based on what I’ve seen over the past three days, I’d say our future is bright.”

“This trip really opened my eyes to a wide range of jobs I really didn’t know existed,” said Loretta Shaughnessy from Crestwood Secondary School. “I hope to use the information from this experience to help me when it comes time to decide my future education.”

“A number of service groups and local businesses stepped forward to sponsor a student from their community,” said Devolin. “I want to thank them for helping me to make these young people more aware of the career options available to them.”
