DEVOLIN PLANS HIS FIFTH CAPITAL EXPERIENCE

LINDSAY - Local MP Barry Devolin has finalized plans for his fifth Capital Experience program. The initiative is aimed at encouraging local youth to get involved and learn more about careers in public life. Two students from each of the riding’s seven secondary schools, plus one student each from Apsley and Dorset will travel to Ottawa this Sunday for three days of meetings and events.

“In order to help ensure equal representation from across the riding, I was able to include one student from Dorset on the trip,” said Devolin. “After receiving feedback following the first Capital Experience in 2004, we decided to add a student from Apsley and as the popularity of the program grew over the years, the people of Dorset are now able to send a student from their community.”

“It is a little known fact that many students in some of the outlying communities do not attend school in the riding and therefore some communities in the past were not able to have representation on the trip,” said Devolin.

“A number of service groups and local businesses have stepped forward to sponsor a student from their community,” explained Devolin. “Many of this year’s sponsors are pleased to repeat their support based on the positive feedback from students who were involved with the past Capital Experience trips.”

“This year’s Capital Experience includes a visit to the South Korean Embassy, a meeting with a print journalist from the National Press Gallery, lunch with representatives from a government relations firm and a talk with people from Amnesty International.”

“It is my understanding that many of the students attending the Capital Experience are involved with their student councils so I’m also hoping this might encourage even more students to get involved in their high school’s student government.”

Traditionally, the Capital Experience is held in October however, due to the recent federal election, the 2008 program was rescheduled for April 26th to the 28th.
