DEVOLIN PROUD TO SUPPORT BUDGET 2009: CANADA’S ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN

OTTAWA – Local MP Barry Devolin is proud to support Budget 2009: Canada’s Economic Action Plan, delivered in the House of Commons today by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

“This Economic Action Plan was developed based on the broadest pre-budgetary consultations in history,” said Devolin. “The government has responded with a multi-year plan designed to stimulate the economy while protecting Canadians hardest hit by the global recession,”

“As we all know, Canada is being negatively impacted by the global recession that originated in the United States,” explained Devolin. “Canada’s Economic Action Plan will help Canadians weather the global recession while securing and ensuring Canada comes out of the recession stronger than ever.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan will stimulate the economy by:

    - building better roads, bridges and other infrastructure;

    - reducing taxes to encourage spending, including a freeze on EI payroll taxes,
      reductions in income tax, and significant tax credits for first-time homebuyers
      and home renovations; and

    - helping businesses get access to financing, so they can continue growing and
      creating jobs.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan will protect Canadians, by:

    - extending EI benefits;

    - providing new opportunities for skills upgrading and training;

    - helping sustain jobs by supporting key Canadian industries and regions facing
      special challenges in the global recession; and

    - helping regions where the local industries are in distress.

“We listened to the concerns of Canadians, and took their advice. Now we’re taking immediate action to help Canadian families and stimulate consumer spending,” said Devolin.
