Protecting Those who Protect Canada

In Canada , there are thousands of people – many of them our friends, family, neighbours, and co-workers – who choose to give back to our country through service in our Canadian Reserve Force.

Reservists choose to serve for many reasons. Some serve out of a sense of duty and patriotism. Some serve out of a sense of tradition. Some serve because they value the skills and experiences that they earn through this service.

Whatever their reasons for serving, all reservists are a credit to their nation through their loyalty, bravery and commitment to Canada . Whether it is by helping respond to a natural disaster or by working alongside members of the full time Canadian Armed Forces abroad, reservists make many sacrifices in the name of serving their country.

Recently, the Conservative Government announced that it would provide additional support to our reservists by providing new legal protections for reservists upon their return to civilian life.

Specifically, reservists who work in federally regulated sectors or within the public service will be guaranteed that their employment will be protected during their service. In addition, students who serve in the reserves will, for the purpose of the Canada Student Loans Program, have their full-time student status protected as well.

Typically, service in the Reserve Force is voluntary and is for an indefinite period of time. Reservists are enrolled to serve on a part-time basis but they may volunteer for full- time employment in the Canadian Forces.

The Reserve Force is organized into four sub-components:

The Primary Reserve is divided into:

·        the Naval Reserve,

·        the Militia or Army Reserve,

·        the Air Reserve,

·        the Communication Reserve,

·        the Health Services Reserve.

Listed below are some of the many reasons to consider joining the Reserves:
