Building Canada and Creating Jobs in Our Riding
On February 13, 2009, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced over $1 billion in joint funding for communities with less than 100,000 residents.
This is money that communities will be able to start spending right away to strengthen the province’s economy, create jobs and build a stronger, brighter future for Ontario communities.
These investments will:
· improve our roads;
· help to ensure continued access to clean water and protect our environment
by upgrading our sewage and wastewater systems;
· improve our community facilities;
· enhance our cultural institutions; and;
· enrich the lives of Ontario residents and visitors alike.
By working together, we were able to secure over $14.4 million in federal-provincial funding for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. I want to thank our municipal officials for all their hard work on these projects.
The funding will support projects in seven local communities:
· Brock Township - $744,644 for Victoria Avenue reconstruction in Beaverton;
· Dysart et al - $574,766 for Pine Lake Bridge replacement;
· Kawartha Lakes - $7,000,000 for the Fenelon Falls Recreation Centre;
· Township of Minden Hills - $1,753,332 for an elevated water storage tank;
· Township of Algonquin Highlands - $2,526,334 for the Stanhope Airport;
· Haliburton County - $1,759,332 for the replacement of the Allsaw Bridge and;
· Peterborough County - $1,526,226 for the replacement of the Deer Bay Bridge
in the Township of Galway-Cavendish-Harvey.
I continue to work with the Township of Cavan-Monaghan to gain joint approval for their Building Canada application for a new, $30 million waste water facility in Fraserville. I am optimistic this job-attracting project will be approved very soon, if a few issues regarding timing can be resolved.
I look forward to watching the progress of these projects, which will provide real results and lasting benefits for our communities.
Together, we can ensure that Canada and Ontario emerge from this time of economic uncertainty sooner than others and stronger than ever.
